A fresh cold snap gripped Johannesburg on 22 June 2026, sending temperatures down over the weekend but according to city emergency services resulting in no major incidents across the metro.

What authorities reported

Alert Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said teams continued to monitor all seven regions of the city for any emergencies. He confirmed no major incidents had been reported due to the extremely cold temperatures in most parts of Johannesburg.

“No major incidents have been reported due to these extremely cold temperatures in most parts of the city of Johannesburg,” Mulaudzi said.

Safety advice and contact details

The city urged residents to exercise caution when using heating devices. Authorities specifically warned against leaving heaters, braziers, imbaula, paraffin stoves and candles unattended while in use to prevent fire incidents during the cold spell.

For life-threatening emergencies, residents were encouraged to call the Emergency Management Services Command and Control Centre on 011 375 5911.

National forecast

According to the South African Weather Service, people could expect a cool to cold day across parts of the country with isolated showers and thunderstorms in some areas. The forecast described a cold, cloudy start for Monday, 22 June, with widespread chill in most provinces and isolated showers and thundershowers.

The forecast included regional notes: Gauteng would remain cold but stable; Mpumalanga, Limpopo and the Free State could see scattered rain along the escarpments and interior; the Northern and Western Cape were expected to have isolated showers, thundershowers and gusty coastal winds; and KwaZulu‑Natal and the Eastern Cape were forecast to be cloudy and cool with rain spreading inland. SAWS also urged residents to brace for icy mornings and evenings, take care on wet roads and be alert to strong coastal winds.
