Third fatal winter shack fire kills woman in Pretoria West settlement
Emergency services discovered a woman dead after a shack fire in Pretoria West, the third major blaze to strike informal settlements in the Tshwane area this winter.
What happened
Firefighters responded to a blaze at the Bremer Street settlement, known locally as the Groen Containers, on Tuesday morning after flames engulfed two shacks. City of Tshwane spokesperson Valentine Matlala confirmed the fire was extinguished and that a woman was found dead in the debris.
Search, recovery and investigation
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. Search and recovery teams were combing through the wreckage to determine whether there were any additional victims.
Pattern of winter blazes
The Pretoria West death is the latest in a series of winter fires affecting informal settlements in Tshwane. Last month, fires at Plastic View in Pretoria East destroyed 150 shacks, and a separate blaze days later consumed 100 more.
Concerns from local representatives
Pretoria West ward councillor Leon Kruyshaar linked the latest incident to unsafe conditions in informal settlements, highlighting overcrowded structures and the presence of illegal recycling depots.
“These activities increase the risk of fires and place lives in danger,” he said, urging residents to avoid storing combustible materials and to prioritise safety.
“I have also raised concerns about the operation of illegal recycling depots among residential structures, which significantly increase the risk of fires and place lives in danger.”
Kruyshaar also warned that the lack of permanent infrastructure and safe planning leaves thousands exposed to deadly risks each winter.
Emergency response
Despite swift emergency responses, the incident underscores the vulnerability of informal settlements to seasonal fires and the challenges faced by residents and authorities during winter.
