IPID opens probe after post-mortem finds bruises on man who died during police raid

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has opened an investigation after a post-mortem reportedly found bruises and abrasions on a man who died during a police operation at a Parklands apartment last week.

What happened

The probe concerns the death of Chika Simon Ibeh during a search at the Parksig Villas Complex in Parklands, Cape Town, on 23 July 2026.

Police operation and collapse

IPID said the operation was carried out by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Public Order Policing unit based at Faure, accompanied by Crime Intelligence, after receiving a tip-off related to alleged possession of drugs.

“It is alleged that on Thursday, members of SAPS Public Order Policing based at Faure Base, accompanied by Crime Intelligence went to search an apartment in Parksig Villas Complex, Parklands, Western Cape, after receiving a tip-off that someone was in possession of drugs,”

During the search, substances suspected to be drugs were allegedly discovered. IPID said Ibeh “suddenly collapsed” and became unresponsive while the search was under way. Emergency medical services were called and declared him dead at the scene.

Post‑mortem and IPID response

IPID said a post-mortem was conducted on 24 July 2026, and that “preliminary findings indicate that the deceased sustained multiple bruises and abrasions on his back and chest.”

IPID confirmed its standby investigators were notified and attended the scene shortly after the incident. The watchdog said its investigation will focus on determining the circumstances that led to the death and whether any police action contributed to it.

The matter has been registered under Bellville CAS 407/07/2026. IPID has urged the public to allow investigators to complete their work before drawing conclusions.
