SPCA investigates dying dog found in wheelbarrow in Rangeview

A critically ill dog was found collapsed in a wheelbarrow at a property in Rangeview, with the Roodepoort Krugersdorp SPCA now investigating a case of severe animal cruelty.

The unsterilised male Pitbull cross was reportedly left without the urgent veterinary care he desperately needed, despite the helper at the property repeatedly warning the owner that the dog was dying.

It was only after a concerned member of the public contacted the Roodepoort Krugersdorp SPCA that help finally arrived.

Inspector rushes dog to vet

Inspector Maseti responded to the call and found the dog in an extremely serious condition.

The dog had completely collapsed and was struggling to breathe. With his condition deteriorating, Inspector Maseti immediately removed him from the property and transported him to a veterinary clinic.

The veterinarian was reportedly horrified by the extent of the dog’s condition.

Blood and urine samples were taken, with the results showing severe dehydration. The dog’s blood was described as almost black and unusually thick, while his urine was dark yellow and concentrated.

He had also apparently been unable to move for an extended period, resulting in pressure sores and multiple skin lesions.

Euthanasia recommended to end suffering

Despite efforts to assess his condition, the dog’s prognosis was extremely poor.

The veterinarian recommended humane euthanasia because of the severity of his condition and the extent of his suffering.

After the dog was euthanised, his body was sent to Onderstepoort for a detailed pathological examination. The results will form part of the SPCA’s criminal investigation.

The owner is expected to face prosecution for allegedly contravening provisions of the Animal Protection Act 71 of 1962.

SPCA urges public to report suspected cruelty

The case has once again highlighted the importance of reporting animals that appear to be neglected or suffering.

The Roodepoort Krugersdorp SPCA says it is increasingly encountering situations where animals are left without proper care for prolonged periods, with intervention only sought when their condition has become critical.

Animals rely on their owners for basic necessities such as food, water, shelter and medical attention. Failing to provide these necessities can amount to animal cruelty and is a criminal offence.

The SPCA also reminds the public that it has legal authority to enforce the Animal Protection Act, and that those found guilty of animal cruelty can face substantial fines, imprisonment and a criminal record.

Anyone who suspects an animal is being neglected or abused is urged to report it as soon as possible.

For the dog found in Rangeview, the SPCA’s investigation will now continue as the pathological examination forms part of the case against the owner.
