South African e-hailing driver resists robbery in dashcam video

An e-hailing driver has gone viral after dashcam footage showed him resisting an attempted robbery in Gauteng on 8 August.

Crime activist, journalist Yusuf Abramjee shared the footage on X, captioning the post, ‘e-hailing driver fights off hijackers. WATCH.’

The footage shows the driver inside his vehicle during a tense confrontation with a passenger. The driver, wearing a cap and striped shirt, appears to resist the attempted robbery as the incident unfolds.

The video has since circulated across social media, prompting discussion about safety for e-hailing drivers and passengers. Reports have highlighted concerns around criminal activity targeting drivers in South Africa.

In May, TopAuto reported concerns about attacks targeting e-hailing drivers, including incidents involving drivers operating for Bolt.

Bolt South Africa senior operations manager Simo Kalajdzic said the company works to strengthen safety measures and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.

The company also highlighted safety features available through its platform, including live trip tracking, trusted contacts, rider verification and emergency assistance.
