Fourteen illegal miners have died and scores more were injured after an incident at a disused mine in Nkaneng, near Rustenburg, North West police confirmed on Tuesday morning.
Police confirmation and immediate response
According to IOL, the provincial police issued a brief statement confirming the casualties at the abandoned mine in Nkaneng. The police statement said:
“14 illegal miners dead at disused mine – scores injured at Nkaneng near Rustenburg.”
The statement said newly appointed provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Arthur Peter Adams, was on his way to the scene.
