City Power has warned Johannesburg residents of a series of planned power interruptions next week and urged customers to prepare and reduce consumption where requested.

Who will be affected and when

City Power said the Braamfontein switching station will be shut down for planned maintenance on Thursday, 27 August 2026. The interruption is scheduled from 8:30am to 4:30pm and will affect parts of the inner city, including the Gautrain precinct and streets around Wolmarans and Smith Street.

A separate planned interruption at the Crown Substation is scheduled for Wednesday, 26 August 2026, from 8am to 4pm. City Power listed affected areas including Crown Wood, Theta Extension 7, Ormonde, Crown Mines, Nasrec, Soccer City, All Gold, Booysens Reserve and Aeroton.

Lenasia outage rescheduled

Work at the Goldev switching station in Lenasia, originally set for 14 August, has been rescheduled to Friday, 21 August 2026. City Power said the interruption will run from 8am to 4pm and will affect streets such as Neptune Road, Galaxy Avenue, Telescope Road, Process Road, Mpumelelo Street and parts of Freedom Park/Siyaya.

System pressure and customer guidance

In an update on Friday morning, City Power reported that

“The power system is constrained.”

The utility urged customers to cut consumption to avoid overloads.

City Power also said the Braamfontein shutdown is needed

“to do essential maintenance work on our network.”

The utility warned residents to treat supply points as live at all times and that

“the supply may be restored at any time.”

Safety and preparation tips

  • Unplug appliances during outages to prevent inrush current when supply resumes.
  • Follow City Power updates via the utility’s WhatsApp channel and social media platforms.

City Power noted that load shedding has been suspended until further notice.
