Gautrain Adds Special Buses and Extended Services for Soweto Derby Weekend
Gautrain provides special return bus service for Soweto Derby ticket holders and extends Sandton train hours for event attendees this weekend.
Special Gautrain Bus Service for Soweto Derby Fans
Football enthusiasts heading to the highly anticipated Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium will benefit from a dedicated return bus service provided by Gautrain on Saturday, October 31. This special arrangement applies to supporters who managed to secure the now sold-out match ticket and accompanying Gautrain transport package.
The transport package includes return bus rides between Park Station and FNB Stadium. This convenient option ensures safe and efficient travel for fans attending the iconic clash between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, two of South Africa’s most celebrated football teams.
Bus Operations and Access
Buses will shuttle between Park Station and the stadium from 10am to 7pm. Passengers will be dropped off and picked up at the FNB Stadium Transport Hub, a central location designed to streamline the process for a high volume of event-goers.
To board the buses, supporters must present both a valid match ticket and evidence of purchasing the Gautrain transport package. Tickets will be scanned at Park Station prior to boarding, with access limited to those meeting both criteria.
It’s important to note that the Gautrain package covers bus travel only. Those travelling by train to Park Station will need to pay standard Gautrain fares separately.
Parking Options for Train Travellers
For fans using the train network to reach Park Station, Gautrain offers station parking at a discounted R10 rate. By contrast, non-rail users are subject to a parking fee of R135, giving football fans added incentive to take advantage of rail services in combination with the bus package.
CEO Comments on the Convenience for Supporters
Tshepo Kgobe, CEO of the Gautrain Management Agency, highlighted the goal of making travel to the match more seamless and accessible.
“Gautrain will offer fans a convenient and seamless way to get to the Soweto Derby, building on our experience in supporting major social and lifestyle events across Gauteng.”
Extended Gautrain Service for Sandton Events
In a move to help Johannesburg’s nightlife, Gautrain will also extend its train service from Sandton Station on Saturday night. The last train will now depart at midnightwell past the standard 8:30pm closing timeaccommodating a range of late events in the area including Johannesburg Pride and the Replenishment Concert. These changes will also be beneficial to others out late in Sandton for different reasons.
- The midnight service is specific to Sandton Station
- The Airport Line will not be included in the extended service
Passengers using these extended services are advised to plan their return trips carefully and take note of the later departure time to align safely with event close.

By coordinating passenger transport for major events like the Soweto Derby and extending hours for gatherings at Sandton, Gautrain helps reduce travel stress and encourages the use of public transit across the city.
