Bash Drives TFG’s Strong Online Sales Growth in South Africa

The Foschini Group (TFG) has been making waves in the retail industry, reporting impressive growth in group sales, particularly through its online channels. A key driver behind this success is the Bash platform, which has significantly boosted online sales for TFG, marking a strong performance in Q3 FY2025.
Record Growth in Online Sales
For the period of April to December 2024, which includes Q3 from September to December 2024, TFG reported an 8.4% increase in group sales for Q3. This far surpasses the 2.0% growth seen in the first half of FY2025, underlining the group’s strong performance in the second half of the financial year.
Among the standout figures, TFG’s online sales soared by 47.2% in Q3 FY2025, with TFG Africa also seeing a robust 49.3% growth. The Bash platform played a pivotal role in this achievement, propelling TFG Africa’s online sales growth by 41.4% year-to-date.
Bash’s Role in Online Sales Growth
Bash’s impact on TFG Africa’s performance cannot be overstated. Not only did it contribute heavily to the online sales increase, but it also gained significant market share in December 2024, even as some competitors saw declining market shares.
“Bash also achieved strong market share gains in December 2024 against a backdrop of declining market shares for some of the pure-play retailers,” TFG stated in its trading update.
Online sales now account for 11.3% of TFG’s total retail sales, with Bash contributing significantly to this figure. This growth is expected to continue, as TFG Africa plans to further enhance its online presence and increase its contribution to overall sales.
Positive Outlook for TFG Africa and the Retail Sector
TFG’s outlook for 2025 is optimistic, with a modest recovery expected for the South African market. The company reported a 14.6% increase in TFG Africa sales for the three weeks ended 18 January 2025. In addition to growing sales, TFG Africa is planning to expand its store footprint, adding over 100 new stores in FY2026.
Despite the challenging global economic conditions, particularly in the UK and Australia, TFG remains positive. White Stuff, which TFG acquired in October 2024, has contributed significantly to the group’s growth, with sales up by 46.5% in Q3 FY2025 in GBP. Sales in Australia, while still struggling, showed signs of improvement, with a 3.0% increase in sales in AUD for the three weeks ending 18 January 2025.
Future Prospects
As TFG continues to leverage the Bash platform and expand its online capabilities, the group is positioning itself for long-term growth in South Africa and beyond. With the expansion of its store estate and the addition of new retail technology, TFG is set to continue its upward trajectory. The company’s focus on improving gross margins, inventory management, and online sales will likely pay off, making TFG a key player in South Africa’s retail landscape for years to come.
