Kruger National Park flies into the world’s top 10 birdwatching destinations
South Africa has added another international tourism accolade to its growing list after Kruger National Park was named one of the world’s top birdwatching destinations in a new global ranking.
The study, conducted by AllClear Travel Insurance, placed the iconic park in 10th position worldwide, recognising it as one of the best places on Earth for bird enthusiasts hoping to experience extraordinary wildlife encounters.
While Kruger has long been celebrated for the Big Five, the latest ranking shines a spotlight on another of its greatest natural treasuresits incredible diversity of birdlife.
More than just a safari destination
For many visitors, Kruger National Park is synonymous with lions, elephants and rhinos. Yet seasoned birdwatchers know the reserve is equally impressive from above the treetops.
The park is home to hundreds of bird species, ranging from colourful rollers and kingfishers to majestic eagles, vultures and elusive owls. Seasonal migrations also bring an ever-changing variety of birds throughout the year, giving repeat visitors a fresh experience with every trip.
Its mix of rivers, wetlands, open savannah and dense woodland creates ideal habitats for both resident and migratory species, making Kruger a favourite destination for photographers, conservationists and casual nature lovers alike.
How the rankings were determined
Researchers assessed internationally recognised birdwatching destinations using eight different criteria rather than relying solely on the number of bird species present.
The study considered:
- Number of bird species
- Number of notable or iconic species
- Likelihood of spotting standout birds
- Average annual temperature
- Wind conditions
- Annual rainfall
- Distance from the nearest airport
- Estimated daily travel costs
Using these factors, each destination received an overall ‘Best Birding’ score out of 100.
Kruger National Park achieved a score of 53.3, securing its place among the world’s top 10.
Peru dominates the global rankings
Peru emerged as the clear leader, claiming the top two positions.
Manú National Park took first place with an impressive score of 83.1, thanks to its astonishing biodiversity and the chance to spot iconic birds such as the Harpy Eagle and Peru’s national bird, the Andean Cock-of-the-rock.
Tambopata National Reserve followed in second place with 67.5, while Kenya’s Tsavo East National Park rounded out the top three.
South America claimed six places in the world’s top 20, while Africa also performed strongly with destinations in Kenya, Botswana and South Africa earning recognition.
Why Kruger’s recognition matters
The ranking reinforces South Africa’s reputation as one of the world’s premier wildlife destinations, but it also highlights the country’s growing appeal beyond traditional safari experiences.
Birdwatching has become increasingly popular among travellers seeking slower, more immersive nature-based holidays. Unlike game drives focused solely on large mammals, birding encourages visitors to explore diverse ecosystems, spend more time outdoors and appreciate the finer details of the landscape.
For local tourism, the recognition offers another reason for international visitors to include Kruger National Park on their travel itineraries while encouraging South Africans to discover the country’s rich birdlife closer to home.
Birdwatching continues to gain global popularity
According to Letitia Smith, a travel insurance expert at AllClear, birdwatching is attracting more travellers because it combines relaxation with unforgettable wildlife experiences.
She noted that travellers should also consider practical factors such as climate, accessibility, daily travel costs and comprehensive travel insuranceparticularly when visiting remote destinationsto ensure a comfortable and stress-free adventure.
As more travellers seek authentic experiences in nature, Kruger National Park’s place among the world’s best birdwatching destinations is another reminder that South Africa’s greatest attractions are not only found on the ground, but also in the skies above.
