Parents in Gauteng are reassured by the Education Department that there is still time to enrol their children for Grade 1 or 8, ensuring they can start their academic journey smoothly.

Late online applications for these grades can be submitted until January 31, providing parents an extended enrollment window. MEC Matome Chiloane confirmed this extension, emphasising that it applies to parents who have not applied. However, he cautioned that these parents will have fewer enrollment options as the department will assign available spaces.

Chiloane acknowledged the challenges in placing every child on time, citing the rapid growth of Gauteng’s economy as one factor contributing to the pressure on the education system. Despite these challenges, parents who applied on time can expect their children to be placed when the academic year commences.

Gauteng’s education system is experiencing significant growth, with over 30,000 learners added annually. Chiloane acknowledged the difficulty in building schools fast enough to keep up with this growth, resulting in the current situation.

The department has received many online enrolment applications for 2024, totalling 305,981. Chiloane reported that 99.8% of completed applications had been placed, assuring parents that their children will be placed by January 17, when schools reopen.

Incomplete applications require parents to submit necessary documents to the school for completion while offered a space. Chiloane explained that parents with incomplete applications cannot request alternative placements; only those with complete applications have that option.

Despite the challenges, the department is optimistic about the upcoming academic year and pleased with the progress made, anticipating a greater and more enthusiastic 2024 academic year.
