Prepare for the excitement of the fifth annual Heidelberg Great Train Race, scheduled for September 30th. The event promises a delightful day filled with unique experiences for attendees.
The festivities will commence with the arrival of the luxurious Rovos Rail Steam Train at the Heidelberg Railway Station. This majestic steam train, making its journey from Pretoria, is expected to arrive at 09:00. At the station, vintage cars and motorcycles will be on display, offering an extraordinary photo opportunity alongside the Rovos steam locomotive.
Following this captivating start, a parade featuring rare and distinctive vintage cars and motorcycles will embark on an hour-long heritage tour through the town of Heidelberg.
Visitors and spectators of the Great Train Race will then gather at the Heidelberg Airfield, where a treasure trove of nostalgic and exciting activities and exhibitions awaits. Admission fees are set at R50 for adults and R30 for learners.
Inside the venue, attendees can choose from a wide array of activities, including thrilling helicopter rides, a chance to ride in the oldest electric car dating back to 1923, and a ride on a miniature steam train. Additionally, the event will feature spectacular aerial displays by the Puma Harvard and Goodyear Eagles.
For those seeking culinary delights, numerous food vendors will be available, along with various stalls to explore. Enthusiasts of vintage transportation can view antique cars, motorcycles, and aircraft up close, providing ample photographic opportunities. A beer tent will be on-site, offering a selection of beverages, while live music by the band Sixty Shades of Grey adds to the festive atmosphere.
A notable addition to this year’s Great Train Race is the vintage motorcycle race, set to take place on a dirt track in front of the beer garden.
The Heidelberg Great Train Race celebrates the charm of vintage transportation and encourages people of all ages to cherish history in a rapidly evolving world shaped by its roots.
