Asavela Mqokiyana to appear in KZN court after alleged 198km/h speeding
Actress Asavela Mqokiyana is due back in Scottburgh court after allegedly being caught driving at 198km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N2.
Mqokiyana was arrested by a Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) team from Park Rynie. The Department of Transport alleges that she was driving a BMW X3 SUV in a 120km/h zone when her vehicle was recorded at 198km/h.
She made her first appearance at the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on October 19. The matter is now scheduled to return to court, where the legal process will continue.
Alleged speeding incident on the N2
The reported speed is 78km/h above the posted limit for the section of road. While the allegation has attracted attention because of Mqokiyana’s public profile, the central issue remains a road traffic matter involving an alleged breach of the speed limit.
An allegation is not a finding of guilt. The court process will provide an opportunity for the matter to be dealt with through the appropriate legal channels, and any final outcome will depend on the proceedings.
The arrest was carried out by RTI officials operating along the N2 near Scottburgh. The department has linked the case to its wider traffic enforcement work in KwaZulu-Natal.
Transport department warns motorists
KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma said the RTI would show no mercy during the festive season. He described Mqokiyana’s arrest as a reminder that the #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation remains in effect.
The department’s message places speeding within a broader road-safety concern. Excessive speed can reduce the time available to react to changing conditions and can make the consequences of a collision more severe. Enforcement operations are intended to identify violations and hold motorists accountable through the relevant legal processes.
Duma said more than 26 #NenzaniLaEzweni multidisciplinary operations were planned through October 28. He also warned that 15 further operations would focus on suspected drunk driving.
“We will have a further 15 operations focusing on drunk driving,” Duma said.
Traffic enforcement figures
The department provided figures for the period from October 15 to 21, covering work by both the RTI and Operation Shanela teams. The reported enforcement activity included:
- 421 speeding charges;
- 12,073 vehicles stopped;
- 1,719 motorists charged;
- 87 motorists charged with driving without licences;
- 141 motorists charged with failing to wear seatbelts;
- 112 unlicensed vehicles identified; and
- 140 vehicles impounded for allegedly having no permits.
These figures reflect the scale of the enforcement campaign during the reported period. They also show that the operations covered a range of alleged violations, including speeding, licensing offences, seatbelt offences and permit-related issues.
Mqokiyana’s television career
Mqokiyana is known for her work as an actress and model. She played Ntwenhle in Isibaya from 2018 to 2021.
She also appeared as Amogelang in the second season of Abomama and played Sizakele in Uzalo. She is the daughter of soccer coach Manqoba Mnqithi.
In addition to her entertainment work, Mqokiyana has reportedly been involved in business interests connected to construction and poultry farming.
What happens next
Mqokiyana’s next appearance is expected to deal with the continuation of the case following her first appearance on October 19. Details of the charge, any plea and further developments will be determined through the court process.
For motorists, the case serves as a reminder that speed limits apply to every road user, regardless of their public profile. The transport department has indicated that enforcement operations will continue, with particular attention also being given to drunk driving.
The allegation against Mqokiyana remains before the court.
