Local police have warned Douglasdale residents about a concerning trend involving bogus cops exploiting victims of car theft and hijacking. According to IOL, scammers have called victims and demanded payment for releasing their stolen vehicles.

Although this scam is not entirely new, recent complaints have prompted police action. Often already shaken from the theft or hijacking, victims receive calls claiming their vehicles have been recovered in another province and require a deposit for their return. Douglasdale police are investigating multiple cases of extortion targeting crime victims, particularly those with existing case numbers.

Captain Mpho Tshetlhane advised residents to verify caller identities and cautioned against making payments, as legitimate police would never demand cash for their services.
