Couple found dead in Kwa-Thema home; police open inquest

Discovery and first response

According to Ekurhuleni District Corporate Communications spokesperson Sergeant Maxwell Mabunda, officers were called to a house on Mokhitli Street at about 1pm on 17 September 2026 after a young woman found her parents unresponsive and led police to a back room.

“They noticed two lifeless bodies lying there,” Mabunda said. The woman’s body was found on a bed and the man’s body was on the floor nearby, the spokesperson said.

Scene details and medical response

Mabunda said police noticed what he described as unusual items next to the bodies. He said officers “saw a transparent plastic with blackish substances on top of the bed” while assessing the scene, and that “both male and female bodies had the same blackish substances in their hands and in their mouths.”

Emergency services were summoned and examined the two victims. Mabunda said paramedics “examined the two bodies and they were declared deceased at the scene.”

Investigation under way

Police opened an inquest docket into the deaths. Mabunda said: “The inquest docket was opened so the police will establish what could have happened.” The matter has been handed to detectives at Kwa-Thema police for further investigation. “The docket is being investigated by Kwa-Thema police until further notice,” he added.

What is not yet known

No official cause of death, toxicology results or confirmation of criminal involvement had been released at the time the report was published.
