Border Management Authority guards intercepted explosive cables worth R100 000 concealed inside a bag of rice on a Malawian bus at the Beitbridge Port of Entry on 28 June 2026. The cables were found during routine inspections of an Interlink bus and a Malawian man was arrested in connection with the seizure.

What happened at the border

The Border Management Authority (BMA) said the explosives were discovered at about 3:30pm on Sunday, 28 June 2026 after a border guard identified suspicious luggage on an Interlink bus travelling from Malawi. “Upon further examination, explosive cables, which are classified as explosives in terms of the law, were discovered concealed inside a bag of rice,” BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi said.

Law enforcement response

The BMA said the South African Police Service Bomb Disposal Unit and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), also known as the Hawks, were summoned to secure the explosives and conduct further investigations.

Arrest and ongoing investigation

A Malawian male suspect was arrested and is being held at the Musina Police Station, the BMA said. “Investigations are continuing to determine the origin, intended destination and possible criminal networks linked to the explosives,” Mogotsi added.

BMA reaction and border-security measures

Acting BMA Commissioner David Chilembe commended the border guard’s vigilance and said the interception shows the Authority’s commitment to protecting the public. “This interception is a testament to the vigilance, professionalism and dedication of our Border Guards, who remain committed to detecting and preventing the movement of prohibited and dangerous goods across our ports of entry,” he said.

The BMA said it remains resolute in strengthening border security through intelligence-led operations, advanced risk profiling and close collaboration with law enforcement to prevent the illegal movement of explosives, firearms, drugs and other contraband.
