FIFA has opened an investigation after videos circulating on social media appeared to show a spectator directing racist gestures and noises at popular streamer and YouTuber iShowSpeed during a World Cup match in Miami.

What happened

The incident took place during the Argentina vs Cabo Verde match at Miami Stadium on 3 July 2026, where Darren Watkins Jr, known online as iShowSpeed, was in attendance. Clips from the stands that went viral online appear to show a fan making racist gestures and noises in Speed’s direction.

FIFA response

In a statement released on social media, FIFA said it had been made aware of the incident and “immediately initiated an investigation.” The governing body also condemned racism and discrimination.

“FIFA strongly condemns racism, hate and discrimination in all forms. These actions have no place in football, at the FIFA World Cup, or anywhere in society.”

FIFA added:

“The FIFA World Cup is a celebration of unity, diversity and respect. It brings together people, cultures and communities from around the world, and anyone who acts in a manner that undermines these values is not welcome in our game.”

Wider context

The alleged abuse reignited conversations around racism in football, despite years of campaigns aimed at eliminating discriminatory behaviour from stadiums. FIFA reiterated its zero-tolerance stance and noted sanctions are available against individuals found guilty of such conduct, while confirming no announcement had been made about disciplinary action in this specific case as the matter remains under investigation.
