Five killed after bakkie collides with long‑distance bus on N2 near Peddie

Five people have died after a collision between a bakkie and a long‑distance bus on the N2 near Peddie, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport confirmed.

What happened

The department said the crash occurred on the N2 near Peddie on Monday morning. All five people who died were travelling in the bakkie; officials identified them as three males and two females.

Injuries and response

A sixth occupant of the bakkie sustained critical injuries and was taken to hospital for further treatment. The bus was travelling from the Eastern Cape to Cape Town and was carrying passengers at the time of the collision.

The bus driver was treated for shock, and a number of passengers received medical attention for minor injuries and trauma, the department said.

Emergency services and investigation

Emergency personnel, law enforcement agencies and traffic officials responded to the scene and have since cleared it, allowing traffic to return to normal. A case of culpable homicide has been opened at Peddie SAPS while the circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.

“The department has extended its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased and wished the injured person a speedy recovery.”
