A Gauteng motorist has been arrested after being clocked at 199 km/h in a 120 km/h zone in Kempton Park.

High-speed law enforcement operation leads to arrest

Members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) High-Speed Unit arrested a 34-year-old man on Wednesday, August 12, at 10:24am in Kempton Park. Officers were conducting law enforcement operations when they recorded the vehicle travelling at excessive speed.

How the offence was detected

The EMPD said officers used a ProLaser 4 speed-measuring device to record a grey BMW X1 travelling at 199 km/h in a 120 km/h speed zone. The vehicle was immediately stopped, and the driver “failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for travelling at such excessive speed,” EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa said.

Charges and next steps

The man was arrested and charged with exceeding the prescribed speed limit. He was detained at Kempton Park Police Station and is expected to appear before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon, Thepa said.

EMPD warning to motorists

Thepa emphasised the dangers of speeding, saying one of the leading contributing factors to road fatalities is exceeding the speed limit. She added that the EMPD is enforcing a “zero tolerance for law-breaking perpetrators; they will face the full might of the law.”

She also urged motorists to “always adhere to the rules of the road and practise caution while operating a motor vehicle on the public road.”
