Gauteng public transport plans for 30 June: what to expect

Published

on

Commuters across Gauteng face a patchwork of public transport options on 30 June, as protest marches planned across the province coincide with adjusted schedules from several operators. Gautrain confirmed on 20 June 2026 that it would operate according to its normal scheduled timetable. Authorities have urged protests to remain peaceful and organisers said criminality and property destruction would not be tolerated.

Gautrain to run normal services

Gautrain confirmed it would operate according to its normal scheduled timetable on 20 June 2026. The operator issued the notice on Monday, advising passengers that services across its network would run as usual.

Rea Vaya to run trunk routes only

Rea Vaya Rapid Bus Transport told commuters that only trunk route buses will operate on Tuesday, 30 June due to the march. The service said only three routes would be available: the T2, T3 and T4 routes. The T4 links central Johannesburg and Sandton via Marlboro, while the T2 and T3 connect Thokoza Park and central Johannesburg via Diepkloof and Auckland Park, respectively.

Metrobus to use temporary schedule and route adjustments

Metrobus confirmed a temporary schedule with route adjustments for 30 June. Usual routes will start at 5am, and the day’s service will terminate at 7.45pm, with adjusted routes during times earmarked for the protests. Metrobus said the adjusted schedule would run from 6am on Tuesday to 3pm that afternoon.

Metrobus said the temporary schedule and route changes were intended “to ensure passenger, driver assets and public safety and to comply with JMPD traffic advisory and directives.” The operator added that the afternoon shift is planned to operate as normal and that any changes would be communicated timeously.

Passengers were advised to plan for extra travel time, especially when heading into central Johannesburg. Metrobus also confirmed that no additional fees would apply to the adjusted routes and that route updates are available on the Metrobus website and via a WhatsApp communication channel accessed by scanning a QR code.

Normal routes and timetables will resume from 5am on Wednesday, 1 July, Metrobus said.

Taxi associations and wider context

The South African National Taxi Council said its affiliates would operate as usual. Marches planned across the province and city on 30 June are expected to affect businesses and commuting employees.

Authorities have urged protesters to remain peaceful in the lead-up to the marches.
