Western Cape SAPS launches investigation after officer’s anti-foreigner video sparks backlash
A video showing a uniformed police officer making anti-foreigner remarks has triggered an internal investigation by the Western Cape South African Police Service (SAPS), as officials move to distance the organisation from the comments.
The footage, which has been widely shared across social media platforms, has prompted criticism from members of the public and renewed discussions around professionalism within South Africa’s law enforcement agencies.
Officer identified as member attached to Vredendal SAPS
According to Western Cape SAPS, preliminary investigations indicate that the officer seen in the video is stationed at Vredendal SAPS on the province’s West Coast.
Senior management has appointed an experienced investigator from the West Coast District to lead an internal probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police say the investigation will establish exactly what occurred before any further action is taken.
SAPS distances itself from the remarks
In a statement, Western Cape SAPS stressed that the comments made in the video do not reflect the values or principles of the organisation.
The police service said it remains committed to serving every person living in South Africa fairly and without discrimination, regardless of nationality.
Authorities also reminded all members that they are expected to maintain professional conduct both on and off duty, particularly while wearing the SAPS uniform.
Once the investigation has been completed, the findings will be released.
Social media reaction fuels wider debate
The video has generated widespread discussion online, with many South Africans expressing concern that statements made by a uniformed officer could damage public confidence in policing.
Others have argued that the incident highlights the importance of holding public officials accountable for their conduct, especially when representing state institutions.
Why the investigation matters
Public trust is central to effective policing. When officers are seen making inflammatory or discriminatory remarks, it can affect how communities perceive the police and their willingness to cooperate with investigations.
By opening an internal inquiry, Western Cape SAPS is seeking to determine the facts while reinforcing its position that officers are expected to act professionally and uphold the standards of the organisation.
The outcome of the investigation will determine whether any disciplinary steps are taken against the officer involved. Until then, SAPS says the matter remains under formal investigation.
