Child’s escape leads police to suspect in shocking Limpopo kidnapping and rape case
A 10-year-old girl’s brave escape helped police track down a man accused of kidnapping and raping his former girlfriend in a disturbing case that has shaken communities in Limpopo’s Waterberg District.
Police confirmed the arrest of a 39-year-old suspect on Monday after a coordinated operation in the Hoopdal area following allegations that he abducted his ex-girlfriend and her young niece before tying them to trees in a remote area.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Thabazimbi Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges including rape and kidnapping.
A terrifying ordeal in broad daylight
According to police, the incident began on the afternoon of 9 May 2026.
The 37-year-old woman and her 10-year-old niece were reportedly walking home from the woman’s workplace when they were allegedly intercepted by the suspect.
Malesela Ledwaba said the man allegedly threatened the pair before tying them to separate trees a short distance apart.
The incident unfolded in a rural part of the province, where isolated roads and limited public transport often leave women and children especially vulnerable while travelling on foot.
Child escapes and raises alarm
In what police described as a critical turning point in the case, the young girl managed to free herself and run for help.
She reportedly fled to Skierlik Village, where residents raised the alarm and authorities were alerted.
Her aunt remained in captivity until the following day, when she managed to escape after allegedly being left unattended.
Police later confirmed that preliminary investigations revealed the woman was allegedly raped during the ordeal.
Rapid response operation leads to arrest
The suspect’s arrest followed a joint operation involving multiple law enforcement and community safety units.
Teams from Hoopdal Visible Policing, Detectives, Hoopdal Rural Safety and Mayunga Protection Services worked together after receiving information about the suspect’s whereabouts.
Police tracked him to a nearby farm, where officers allegedly found him sleeping inside a dwelling.
The arrest has since drawn praise online, with many social media users commending both the child’s courage and the swift police response.
Others, however, expressed anger over the ongoing crisis of gender-based violence in South Africa, particularly in rural communities where victims often struggle to access immediate help.
GBV remains a national concern
The case once again places the spotlight on South Africa’s ongoing battle with gender-based violence and crimes involving intimate partners.
Across the country, advocacy groups have repeatedly warned that women face heightened danger after ending relationships, with former partners frequently linked to kidnapping, assault and femicide cases.
Children are also increasingly becoming secondary victims in domestic violence incidents, either as witnesses or direct targets.
In Limpopo and other rural provinces, activists have long argued that poor infrastructure, isolation and slow emergency response times can increase the danger facing vulnerable victims.
Specialised investigators now handling the case
The matter has been transferred to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.
The suspect currently faces:
- Two counts of kidnapping
- One charge of rape
Police investigations are ongoing, and authorities have indicated additional charges could still be considered depending on the outcome of the probe.
For many following the case, the survival and escape of both victims particularly the actions of the 10-year-old girl may ultimately have prevented an even greater tragedy.
