Limpopo mob-justice horror: Six men jailed for life after victims burned alive
Polokwane court hands down life terms in brutal mob-justice killings
Six men have been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Polokwane High Court for the mob-justice killing of two men in Limpopo’s Mopani District. The sentence follows a brutal August 2023 attack in the Maake policing area that left the victims burned beyond recognition.
What the court found
The six accused Maseabi Godfrey Senyolo, 46; Thabiso Senyolo, 39; Elmon Shai, 32; Mmoye Freddy Senyolo, 42; Isiah Melanzi, 40; and Tjatji William Gafane, 43 were convicted on two counts of murder and two counts of kidnapping. Each received two life sentences for murder and an additional five years for kidnapping. The court also declared all six men unfit to possess firearms.
How the attack unfolded
Police say the victims, Tantane Paulus Mangena, 49, and Tshepo Conrates Malatjie, 34, were forcibly taken from their homes on 23 August 2023 after being accused of theft. According to the police account, the men were assaulted at the All-Star sports ground before being taken to Mokgoloboto Mountain.
At Mokgoloboto Mountain, the attack escalated. The accused allegedly used hands, boots, firewood and stones in the assault, forced the victims to drink petrol, poured petrol over their bodies and set them alight, burning them beyond recognition.
Police reaction and investigation
The South African Police Service welcomed the sentencing and framed it as a warning against vigilante violence. Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba described the events and highlighted the handling of the case.
“The accused were arrested following a brutal incident that occurred on 23 August 2023, when the victims, Tantane Paulus Mangena, 49, and Tshepo Conrates Malatjie, 34, were forcibly taken from their homes after being accused of theft,”
“They were assaulted at the All-Star sports ground before being taken to Mokgoloboto Mountain, where they were further attacked with hands, boots, firewood, and stones. The accused forced the victims to drink petrol, poured petrol over their bodies, and set them alight, burning them beyond recognition,”
The investigation was led by Captain Alfred Hopane of the Maake Detectives Unit. Police said prosecutors successfully opposed bail during the trial, ensuring the accused remained in custody until sentencing.
Officials urge communities to report crime
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the sentence and condemned mob justice.
“This sentence sends a clear message that mob justice and acts of brutality will not be tolerated. We urge communities to report crime to the police rather than take the law into their own hands,”
The case and sentence stand as a stark reminder of the consequences of vigilante violence and the police call for communities to use official channels to report crime.
