Angry crowd traps officers and murder suspect for about an hour in Ndwedwe
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) officers arrested a suspect wanted for the alleged murder of a 22-year-old after finding him hiding under a bed at a relative’s home in Ndwedwe, KwaZulu‑Natal.
Search and arrest
RUSA had initially searched dense bushland after receiving information that the suspect was hiding there. A drone was launched and conducted an aerial search, but the suspect was not located. After questioning locals, including residents, relatives and associates, officers established that the man was at a relative’s house. About two hours later, RUSA officers found the suspect hiding beneath a bed, restrained him and called the South African Police Service (SAPS) to the scene.
Crowd prevents removal
When SAPS members arrived and the accused was handed over, a large crowd gathered and demanded the suspect be released into their custody. Several people openly threatened to attack the policemen if they attempted to remove him from the area.
Vehicle attacked and exit blocked
As the suspect was loaded into a police van, members of the crowd threw stones at the vehicle and blocked the driveway with concrete blocks and steel drums. According to RUSA, individuals armed with weapons surrounded the area and threatened to set the state vehicle alight. The two policemen and their prisoner were effectively trapped for about an hour while RUSA officers were redeployed to the remote location.
Aerial support and extraction
A helicopter was dispatched to the scene; the aircrew maintained aerial surveillance and provided intelligence to ground crews on the crowd’s movements and activities. Backup officers secured the scene and removed the obstacles blocking the roadway to create an escape route. The trapped policemen and the murder suspect were then escorted to safety without further incident.
RUSA confirmed the suspect has been detained.
