Her father, Lucky Mkhwanazi, recalls walking her to school and purchasing biscuits from the nearby shop, not knowing it would be their last interaction. Refilwe, a beloved student at Mandlethu Primary School, fell ill during class, prompting her father’s urgent summons to the school. Despite efforts by paramedics, Refilwe tragically passed away in the classroom, leaving her family and community devastated.

The circumstances surrounding her death sparked outrage, leading to confrontations with the shop owner and subsequent incidents of looting in the area. However, Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwan appealed for calm, urging residents to avoid further violence. As the community mourns the loss of little Refilwe, the cortège will proceed to the Vlakfontein Cemetery at 11:00 following the funeral service.
