Suspended sergeant Fannie Nkosi will stay behind bars as Pretoria court centralises cases

Suspended SAPS sergeant Fannie Nkosi will remain in custody after the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court postponed his matters to 22 July so several criminal cases against him can be combined into a single trial.

State moves to centralise firearms, drugs and impersonation-related matters

The matter was briefly before the court on Thursday as the prosecution sought to consolidate cases linked to alleged firearms offences, drug-related allegations and claims that Nkosi falsely presented himself as a police colonel in Venda.

Police say a raid at Nkosi’s home in April uncovered high-calibre firearms, ammunition, a stun grenade, cash and official police dockets. He is also accused of interfering in a 2022 drug case in Thohoyandou by allegedly removing marijuana from police custody under false pretences.

Prosecutors have asked that the Thohoyandou matter be transferred to Pretoria so all charges can be heard together. The State told the court that centralising the matters will help streamline the prosecution while investigations continue.

Bail denied; appeal pending

Nkosi will remain behind bars after earlier bail applications were denied. The court previously ruled he had not shown that his release would be in the interests of justice. His bail appeal is scheduled to be heard in the Pretoria High Court on 26 May.

Allegations linked to the Madlanga Commission and legal team changes

During proceedings related to the Madlanga Commission, some witnesses accused Nkosi of acting as a middleman between alleged cartel boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, senior police officers and Tshwane officials. Following the developments, his original legal team withdrew from the case.

A new defence team is expected to challenge the State’s case and the decision to refuse bail as the combined prosecution proceeds.
