The council will now reconvene on 2nd May to elect a new mayor

Following Thapelo Amad’s resignation as mayor of Johannesburg, Colleen Makhubele cancelled Tuesday’s council meeting. The council will now reconvene on 2nd May to elect a new mayor. The council speaker was also due to face a motion of no confidence, as reported by eNCA.

Makhubele clarified that Amad’s resignation means the entire mayoral committee falls off, hence the need to elect a new mayor. On the other hand, Amad stated that his resignation was not because of public opinion but rather the coalition’s priorities. He also expressed satisfaction with his executive’s strides in service delivery.
