Gauteng Weather Forecast: Clear Skies and Chilly Mornings Ahead

Gauteng Weather: Sunshine in the Day, Ice in the Air
Expect crisp mornings, clear skies, and a classic Highveld winter chill this week.
It is that time of year when the skies over Gauteng are picture-perfect by midday, but your toes are frozen before the kettle’s even boiled. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecasts mostly fine conditions for the province; however, do not be fooled by the blue skies, the cold is setting in, especially in the early hours.
Watch Out for Frost in the South
According to SAWS forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela, Gauteng will remain cold to cool with frost expected in parts of the southern interior. If you live or drive near areas such as Vereeniging, Heidelberg, or southern Johannesburg, expect icy windscreens in the morning and a bit of slippery crunch underfoot.
While no major airmass changes are expected this week, the biting early morning temperatures will linger, particularly where minimums dip below zero. This includes open, low-lying areas with limited urban heating.
So yes, it is that kind of week: gloves for the morning commute, sunglasses for lunch.
Pretoria: Warming Up Slightly
Pretoria will enjoy mostly clear skies all week, with daily highs climbing slowly from 19°C midweek to a mild 23°C on Saturday before dipping slightly again by Sunday.
Pretoria 5-day forecast (SAWS):

Johannesburg will begin the week under cloudy skies, but conditions will clear by Thursday. Daytime highs will remain in the upper teens to low twenties, still chilly but manageable. The real challenge will be the morning lows, hovering between 5°C and 8°C.
Johannesburg 5-day forecast (SAWS):

-
Thursday: Mostly clear: 19°C / 6°C
-
Friday: Clear skies: 19°C / 7°C
-

Social Media Says: It Is Soup Weather
On social media, locals are already dubbing this week “balaclava season,” with memes circulating about leaving hot water bottles at work and warming hands on coffee cups like sacred relics. Many Gautengers welcome the cold, saying the dry air and clear skies make for perfect sunsets and morning runs. Others are less enthusiastic, complaining that their geysers cannot keep up and their cars feel like freezers on wheels.
The Takeaway? Layer Up But Enjoy the Light
Gauteng’s winter might bite in the mornings, but with no rain and plenty of sunshine forecast, it remains one of the most bearable cold snaps in the country. If you are heading out early, brace for the frost; by lunchtime, you will likely be peeling off that second jersey.
