Should Uber drivers refuse destinations in 2025?

If a driver accepts your ride, they must take you to your destination. Uber’s Non‑Discrimination Policy explicitly forbids refusing riders based on destination. Drivers who repeatedly cancel trips for where you’re headed risk losing access to the Uber platform.

An Uber driver can’t lawfully refuse to drop you off at your destination once a trip is accepted.

Why do drivers sometimes back out?

There’s confusion behind the scenes. In many cases, drivers only see the destination once they accept the ride. In South Africa, since May 2023, drivers now see both your destination and their expected net earnings before accepting a trip. Previously, the details were hidden, prompting frustration among riders, and some drivers later cancelled upon learning the destination.

Today, drivers see the info up front, helping them decide whether the trip is worth it without cancelling mid‑ride.

South Africa gets destination and earning visibility

In Johannesburg, Cape Town, and across RSA, the Uber Driver app now shows:

  • Destination before accepting

  • Estimated net earnings after Uber’s service fee (3–35%)

  • Additional fare adjustments for unexpected delays or dropped route changes.

This transparency aims to cut unfair cancellations by giving drivers all trip details upfront.

Local perspective: the rider’s experience

Even so, stories persist of journeys where riders board and then the driver refuses. Some have shared experiences where, after waiting at pickup, the driver sighed in resignation and then cancelled, leaving the passenger stranded and late.

From a Joburg commuter’s point of view, that’s more than inconvenience; it’s disrespect. Riders rightly expect that once they’ve booked and the driver has agreed, the trip will go ahead.

What’s Uber’s community stance?

Uber’s Community Guidelines emphasise common courtesy, safety, and zero tolerance for discriminatory behaviour. That includes rejecting trips just because of where someone is going.

If you suspect a driver cancelled because of your destination, you can report it via the app under “Help” → “My driver refused my destination.”

Why this matters now

  • In 2025, Uber promotes rider inclusivity and driver transparency in South Africa

  • With destination and earnings visibility before acceptance, in‑ride cancellation due to destination should be rare

  • Repeated refusal can result in driver account deactivation under Uber’s rules

What riders can do

  • Report refusal via the app. Uber investigates and may limit driver access if policy is breached.

  • Share the destination ahead of time when matching with the driver, especially for long trips, to avoid misunderstandings.

  • Support fair treatment: Safer, more respectful trips benefit everyone in Joburg and beyond.

A fresh angle: fairness in the gig economy

This isn’t just about policy; it’s part of a bigger conversation. Rideshare drivers are independent contractors, so they understandably consider trip viability. Yet riders stake time, plans, and budgets. Mismatches that leave travellers stranded can echo long after the ride ends. The destination‑visibility update in South Africa is a welcome step toward balance, but respect on both sides remains essential.

TL;DR for Johannesburg riders

Drivers must not refuse a destination once accepting a trip. Destination and expected earnings have been shown before acceptance in South Africa since May 2023. Cancelled rides due to destination are reportable. Reports can prompt Uber to take action. Treat others with fairness and know your rights on the platform.
