Togo scraps visas for African travellers 30-day visa-free entry now in effect

Togo has removed visa requirements for African travellers, allowing citizens from across the continent to enter the West African country without a visa for stays of up to 30 days. The policy took effect on 18 May.

What the change means for travellers

The government says the move is intended to boost regional integration, tourism and business opportunities by making travel to Togo easier for Africans. The measure permits African passport holders visa-free entry for up to 30 days.

Entry requirements remain in place

Officials emphasised that travellers must still comply with existing immigration, security and public health requirements before entering the country. Visitors are required to submit a declaration through a government platform at least 24 hours before arrival to obtain the travel document needed for entry.

Government statement

“Through this major reform, the President of the Council reaffirms his commitment to making Togo a space of openness, mobility, opportunities, and cooperation at the heart of the African continent.”

Economic and regional ambitions

The policy aligns with Togo’s stated ambition to position its capital, Lomé, as a regional hub for trade, services and investment. Officials expect easier travel rules to attract entrepreneurs, investors and skilled professionals while supporting tourism and business travel.

Wider continental trend

Several other African countries have also eased entry rules for continental visitors. The article notes that Rwanda, Ghana and Benin have adopted similar approaches as governments pursue greater mobility within Africa.

Goal of deeper integration

Observers quoted in the report say reducing visa barriers is viewed as a step toward stronger trade ties and economic cooperation, and could support effective implementation of continental trade agreements by making cross-border movement easier for business and investment.
