Gauteng police say a mass shooting in the Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland, Johannesburg, has left 12 people dead and the number of injured victims has risen to 15. The attack occurred on Tuesday night, authorities said.

Police update and casualty details

In an update on Thursday, June 11, Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed the increase in injured victims and said the death toll remains at 12. She said investigations are underway to establish the motive of the shooting.

According to police, eight adult males and three adult females were declared dead at the scene, and one additional male later died in hospital. Emergency Medical Services were summoned to the scene and victims with gunshot wounds were taken to medical facilities for treatment.

Allegations about the attack and suspects

The shooting is reported to be believed to be linked to the fight over illegal mining activities in the area. Police say it is alleged that more than 10 suspects were dropped off by a white Toyota Quantum near a petrol station in Cleveland. The suspects allegedly entered the informal settlement through both entrances, moved through the area and opened fire on residents at multiple locations before fleeing in the same vehicle.

Investigations and manhunt

Police have launched a manhunt and provincial and district detectives, supported by crime intelligence and forensic experts, have been mobilised to investigate the incident and track down the suspects. No arrests have been made, Nevhuhulwi said.

Response timeline

Police reported that at approximately 11:10pm they responded to a complaint of a shooting in progress at the informal settlement. Upon arrival, officers found numerous victims with gunshot wounds and called Emergency Medical Services to assist the injured.

Community impact

The attack has left residents reeling and the wider community shocked, according to reporting on the incident.

“The number of injured victims of the Cleveland mass shooting has increased to 15. The death toll is still standing at 12,”
