Crime Intelligence boss shot in Houghton ahead of Madlanga testimony
Major-General Feroz Khan, a senior Crime Intelligence officer, was shot in Houghton on 25 June 2026 and is fighting for his life in hospital, officials said. Police have opened a high-level investigation into the attack.
What happened
According to reporting, Khan was shot while driving in his neighbourhood in Houghton on 25 June 2026. Two unidentified assailants travelling in a white Mercedes-Benz reportedly fired on his Suzuki Baleno. Police found two 9mm bullet casings at the cordoned-off scene.

Khan was rushed to Milpark Hospital, where he is believed to be in a critical condition and is described as fighting for his life.
Investigation under way
The South African Police Service said a high-level probe has been opened. Ballistic experts were on the scene, and investigators from the Hawks, Crime Intelligence and the Detective Service are leading the inquiry. The Political Killings Task Team has also been involved, the police said.
Ties to the Madlanga Commission
According to published reports, Khan was due to give evidence to the Madlanga Commission shortly after the shooting; some outlets reported his testimony was scheduled for 1 July 2026 (sources differ on exact scheduling).
Reactions
Police leadership condemned the shooting and said no resource would be spared to identify and arrest those responsible.
“Whoever did must pay for it.”
The comment was attributed to Khan’s uncle, Preggy Padayachee.
