Nine undocumented foreign nationals arrested in Reitz biscuit factory raid
Police in the Free State detained nine undocumented foreign nationals during a raid at a biscuit-manufacturing facility in Reitz. The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation after information was received that foreign nationals were allegedly employed at the premises, a police spokesperson said.
Intelligence-led operation and arrests
Warrant Officer Mmako, a police spokesperson, said the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Operational Command Centre acted on information about a group of foreign nationals allegedly employed at the factory. “An intelligence-driven operation was conducted at the premises, resulting in the arrest of nine undocumented foreign nationals,” Mmako said.
Police confirmed the suspects have been detained “while the necessary immigration verification and administrative processes are being finalised.”
Possible action against the factory owner and closure of premises
Authorities engaged the local municipality regarding the matter, and Mmako said the factory is expected to be closed pending further investigations.
Police indicated the probe could extend beyond the arrested individuals. “Authorities are also considering further action against the owner for alleged non-compliance with applicable legislation,” Mmako said.
SAPS statement and enforcement focus
The South African Police Service reiterated its enforcement priorities. “The South African Police Service remains committed to enforcing the law, ensuring compliance with immigration legislation, and working closely with relevant stakeholders to address all forms of unlawful activity,” Mmako said.
Current status
The arrested individuals remain in custody while immigration verification processes are completed.
