An Ethiopian national is due to appear in the Mmabatho Magistrate’s Court after an alleged stabbing that left a 26‑year‑old man dead at his tuck shop in Magogoe‑Tshepang village, outside Mahikeng in the North West.

What happened

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when an altercation reportedly broke out between the two men at the tuck shop. It is alleged the suspect stabbed the 26‑year‑old with a sharp object. The victim sustained fatal injuries and succumbed while being transported to a local health facility.

Arrest and court appearance

Police arrested the 29‑year‑old suspect shortly after the attack. He is scheduled to appear in the Mmabatho Magistrate’s Court today.

Official response

North West MEC for community safety and transport management Wessels Morweng described the killing as a “senseless act of violence” and offered condolences to the bereaved family. He also praised the police for their prompt response, which led to the arrest.

“There is no justification for the taking of a human life,”

“We condemn this senseless act of violence in the strongest possible terms. This kind of violence has no place in our communities; it is, in fact, a threat to the foundation of our democracy and our efforts to enhance social cohesion.”

Context

The incident follows nationwide demonstrations held on Tuesday calling for the deportation of undocumented foreign nationals.
