IDAC investigator discharged after weekend hospitalisation, Madlanga Commission told

According to IOL, Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) chief investigator Dylan Perumal was discharged from hospital after a weekend admission, a development the Madlanga Commission was told on Monday.

Hospitalisation delayed access to investigation docket

The commission heard that Perumal’s hospitalisation prevented his legal team from consulting him about a specific investigation file. Advocate Andrea Johnson’s lawyer, Apla Bodlani, told the commission the team had been unable to access Perumal while he was unwell.

“We were informed that he’s not well. He was hospitalised during the course of the past weekend, so we also didn’t have access to him,” Bodlani said.

In a later update to the commission, Bodlani said information received on Sunday confirmed that Perumal had since been discharged from hospital.

Missing docket found but contents not yet handed over

According to IOL, the Madlanga Commission had sought answers about a docket that was initially reported missing from Perumal’s office. After a lunch adjournment, Bodlani confirmed the file had been located, but the legal team had not yet decided whether its contents should be handed to the commission.

Allegations against Perumal and a criminal complaint

According to IOL, Perumal faces allegations that he added more names to an investigation before receiving authorisation from IDAC head Advocate Andrea Johnson.

According to IOL, National Coloured Congress leader and Member of Parliament Fadiel Adams has opened a criminal case accusing Perumal of sharing sensitive information with senior IDAC investigator Brian Padayachee for disclosure before the commission.

According to IOL, the Madlanga Commission’s work on the matter is ongoing.
