Police investigate deaths of St Stithians pupil and alumnus found at Mpumalanga lodge

South Africa is once again reminded of how quickly tragedy can ripple through a school community after the sudden deaths of a St Stithians College learner and a recent alumnus in Mpumalanga.

The two young people were found dead at a lodge in Sabie on Monday, leaving classmates, teachers, families and friends searching for answers as police continue their investigation.

Police open inquest as investigations continue

Jacaranda FM reports that Mpumalanga police have confirmed that an inquest has been registered following the discovery of the bodies. At this stage, investigators have indicated there is no evidence suggesting foul play, although the circumstances surrounding the deaths are still being examined.

Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo said authorities are awaiting the results of postmortem examinations, which are expected to help establish the exact cause of death.

An inquest is a standard legal process in South Africa when the cause of a person’s death is unknown or requires further investigation. It does not imply that criminal activity has taken place.

School pays tribute to two young lives

The victims have been identified as Ethan Coetzee, who completed matric at St Stithians Boys’ College in 2025, and Cameron Waldeck-Cooks, a Grade 11 learner at St Stithians Girls’ College.

In heartfelt tributes, the school reflected on the lasting impression both young people made during their time at the institution.

Cameron, who had been part of the St Stithians community since Grade R in 2015, was remembered as a caring, determined and compassionate learner. The Girls’ College described her as someone whose quiet strength, resilience and kindness touched many lives.

The school said she would be remembered not only as a valued student but also as a beloved daughter, sister and friend whose absence will be deeply felt throughout the Saints community.

Remembering a respected sportsman and mentor

The Boys’ College honoured Ethan Coetzee as a humble and dedicated young man who embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm.

He was recognised for representing the school’s first rugby team while also participating in equestrian sport and community service. Teachers and fellow learners remembered him as someone who inspired confidence in others and had a natural ability to make people feel welcomed, supported and appreciated.

According to the school, his positive influence extended well beyond the sports field and classroom, earning him the respect of teammates, coaches and friends alike.

A community mourns together

The loss has sent shockwaves through the wider St Stithians community, one of South Africa’s best-known independent schools, where generations of learners often develop lifelong friendships.

School leaders have extended their condolences to the families of both Ethan and Cameron, as well as to classmates, alumni and staff members affected by the tragedy.

As investigations continue, many are focusing on supporting one another while awaiting clarity from the official inquiry.
