Community and media lead to arrest of Soweto murder suspect, police say

Police say community members and media publicity helped trace and arrest Simiso Silomo Phakathi in the murder of Jabulisile Tshabalala in Soweto.

Simiso Silomo Phakathi, 27, was arrested after community members recognised his photograph following media appeals, police said. The arrest relates to the killing of his girlfriend, Jabulisile Josephina Tshabalala, whose body was found in Orlando East, Soweto.

How the trace unfolded

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the South African Police Service (SAPS) had urged Phakathi to hand himself in after Tshabalala was found stabbed to death. Tshabalala, 37, was last seen alive on August 7, 2026, and her body was discovered on August 13, 2026 inside the backroom where she had been residing with the suspect.

Mathe said Tshabalala’s body was found covered with blankets and clothes. After the appeal for information and the release of Phakathi’s photograph, communities and media amplified the search.

Community recognition led to arrest

Within four hours of SAPS releasing Phakathi’s details, members of the Joubertina community in Klerksdorp recognised him from the widely circulated photograph and provided information to police, Mathe said. The suspect was arrested and will be transported back to Johannesburg to face charges.

Police response and message

Acting national police commissioner Lt-Gen Puleng Dimpane thanked communities and the media for their role in locating Phakathi. Dimpane said the arrest demonstrated “the power of a united society working alongside the police.”

Mathe quoted the police warning issued earlier:

“There is nowhere to hide, and police will continue pursuing every lead until you are brought before a court of law.”

Dimpane also urged communities to keep providing information when they recognise wanted suspects, saying:

“SAPS reiterates that there is no hiding place for perpetrators of serious and violent crimes. Those who commit such crimes will be pursued relentlessly, wherever they may be, until they are brought before a court of law.”

Women’s Month focus

Mathe said the arrest comes as SAPS observes Women’s Month and intensifies efforts against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). The organisation aims to strengthen efforts to ensure perpetrators of violence against women are swiftly identified, arrested and brought before the courts, she added.

Police thanked everyone who shared the suspect’s photograph and provided information that helped lead to the arrest.
