Norwood racist abuse video prompts SAJBD response

A confrontation in Johannesburg’s Norwood has drawn attention after a video showing an exchange between two motorists circulated widely on social media, with allegations of racist and Islamophobic abuse now followed by a criminal complaint.

The incident took place on 21 September and involved 35-year-old content creator Abdur Rahamaan, who says the confrontation began while he was driving in the area.

The South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) has since condemned the language attributed to the other man and called for tensions between different communities to be de-escalated.

The Citizen reported that Rahamaan rejected the characterisation of the incident as road rage, saying he believed the confrontation involved targeted racist and anti-Muslim abuse.

He said he began recording after the initial exchange, with the footage subsequently spreading across social media.

Rahamaan alleges that the other motorist followed him closely, hooted and flashed his lights before the interaction escalated after he arrived near his driveway.

He added that the man allegedly threatened him, his family and Muslims more broadly. The report said Rahamaan recorded the encounter after the alleged abuse had taken place, with the resulting footage later circulating online.

A separate report by The Post includes video footage of the later exchange between the two men. In that account, Rahamaan alleges that the man repeated a racial slur and referred to the Israel-Gaza conflict during the confrontation.

The SAJBD said it was aware of the circulating video and condemned the language and conduct attributed to the man.

‘The SAJBD unequivocally condemns racist and hateful speech, irrespective of whom it is directed at, and this outrage is mirrored by our community. The man’s behaviour is offensive and unacceptable.’

The organisation also addressed the fact that the confrontation ended outside a Jewish place of worship.

‘It is particularly unfortunate that this incident ended outside a Jewish place of worship, as this behaviour is the antithesis of what places of worship represent.’

The SAJBD stressed that the conduct of one individual should not be taken as representative of the wider Jewish community.

Norwood itself has a diverse religious and cultural makeup, with Jewish, Muslim, Christian and other communities living in the suburb. The organisation said maintaining respectful relations between these communities was important amid the tensions surrounding the incident.

‘Norwood is a multicultural suburb, which includes Muslim, Christian, Jewish, and other communities. It is important that we do everything to de-escalate the friction between these communities and rather allow for a spirit of respectful co-existence.’

Rahamaan has opened a case at Norwood Police Station following the confrontation.

His attorneys, Asif Ismail and Riad Amanjee of IA Law, confirmed that a charge of crimen injuria has been laid against the accused.

The offence relates to the unlawful and intentional serious impairment of another person’s dignity.

The legal team said it would work with investigators to preserve evidence relating to the incident. It also indicated that a complaint to the South African Human Rights Commission was being considered in connection with the allegations of racism and Islamophobia.
