Video: Meghan Markle’s estranged father arrested over disturbing claims

For almost a decade, Thomas Markle has been the most unpredictable figure on the edges of the royal story. Paid paparazzi pictures, tabloid interviews and public pleas to his famous daughter all made headlines. On Friday, 6 November 2026, his name surfaced for a far more serious reason, Joburg Etc reports.

The 82-year-old father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has been arrested in Florida over allegations that he possessed child sexual abuse material.

The BBC was among the first to carry the development, relaying reporting from its American partner. In a short news clip shared on Instagram, a presenter told viewers, ‘Three sources familiar with the matter have told our partners in America, CBS News, that Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas, has been arrested in connection with allegations he possessed child sex abuse material.’

At that stage, details were scarce. ‘The case remains under seal,’ the presenter added, before stressing how significant the moment was: ‘Worth just repeating that major development in this story.’ According to the BBC, Markle had previously denied the allegations, calling them ‘sick lies’.

By Friday afternoon, the picture had become clearer. FBI agents arrested Markle at a senior living facility near Tampa, and he made his first court appearance in Tampa later that day, arriving in a wheelchair.

He faces one count of possession of child sexual abuse material, filed in California. Investigators say they searched two storage units registered in his name, including one in the Los Angeles area, and found about 78 items containing suspected abuse material. FBI Director Kash Patel said agents ‘moved quickly, identified and located the explicit material’, NBC News reported.

If convicted, Markle faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in a federal prison. He has not been convicted of any crime, and the case will now move through the American courts.
