Durban mass shooting leaves 11 dead in KwaMakhutha

A Durban mass shooting has left 11 people dead and three injured after three men allegedly opened fire on a group inside a house in KwaMakhutha on Tuesday night, 22 September.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), 13 men and one woman were reportedly attending a party at a house in the Ziko area when the gunmen arrived and opened fire.

Ten people, including the woman who is believed to have been pregnant, died at the scene. Four others were taken to hospital, where one later succumbed to their injuries.

KwaZulu-Natal police have launched a manhunt for the suspects as investigators work to establish what led to the shooting.

SAPS said preliminary investigations indicate that some of the victims were on Crime Intelligence’s radar in connection with alleged illegal activities. Police have not disclosed further information, saying this could affect the investigation.

The mass shooting motive has not yet been confirmed, with SAPS saying a feud between rival groupings ‘cannot be ruled out’ as investigators work to establish what happened.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing and urged anyone with information that could assist authorities to come forward through official channels.

The shooting has left three people injured and families facing the loss of 11 people, including a woman who police said was believed to be pregnant.

SAPS has not provided further details about the identities of those killed or the circumstances that may have led to the gathering being attacked.
