KwaZulu-Natal authorities are stepping up their road safety message ahead of the festive season, with actress and model Asavela Mqokiyana’s speeding case highlighting the consequences motorists could face for allegedly breaking the rules of the road.

Mqokiyana is expected to return to the Scottburgh Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, after she was allegedly caught driving at 198km/h in a 120km/h zone along the N2 near Ellingham.

According to a statement issued by KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma on Tuesday, 27 October, the actress was arrested by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) team from Park Rynie.

She was reportedly driving a BMW X3 SUV at the time and appeared in court on 19 October.

Road safety operations intensify across KwaZulu-Natal

The case comes as provincial authorities continue their #NenzaniLaEzweni multidisciplinary operations, aimed at tackling dangerous driving and improving road safety.

Between 15 and 21 October, the RTI and Operation Shanela teams recorded thousands of traffic-related interventions across the province.

The operations resulted in:

  • 421 speeding charges
  • 12,073 vehicles stopped
  • 1,719 motorists charged
  • 87 motorists charged for driving without valid driving licences
  • 141 motorists charged for not wearing seatbelts
  • 112 unlicensed vehicles identified
  • 140 vehicles impounded for operating without the required permits

The figures highlight the scale of enforcement taking place as authorities work to curb dangerous behaviour on the province’s roads.

More roadblocks planned before the festive season

Duma said enforcement efforts would continue, with more than 26 #NenzaniLaEzweni multidisciplinary operations planned between 22 and 28 October.

A further 15 operations will specifically target drunk driving.

With increased travel expected during the festive season, authorities are warning motorists that traffic laws will be enforced strictly.

“RTI will have no mercy this festive season,” Duma said, pointing to the enforcement activities carried out during Transport Month.

As the festive season approaches, authorities are urging drivers to obey speed limits and take responsibility for their own safety and that of other road users.
