Boksburg Explosion Bridge Reconstruction Proceeds as Scheduled

Boksburg explosion reconstruction project

The Boksburg explosion reconstruction project, aimed at restoring the Plantation railway bridge damaged by the Christmas Eve gas tanker explosion, continues despite legal challenges. This publication has learnt that the application for an urgent interim interdict to prevent Prasa from implementing the tender was dismissed with costs and struck from the urgent role. Construction work progresses steadily despite the ongoing court challenge regarding the tender award for the project. Prasa has yet to respond to the Boksburg Advertiser’s request for a progress report on the reconstruction efforts.

However, the Advertiser’s monitoring indicates that work is proceeding according to plan, unaffected by the legal proceedings. When revisiting the site late last month, crews were observed diligently working, with significant progress in removing concrete rubble, wreckage, railway tracks, and electrical wires.

The reconstruction contract, encompassing design, demolition, specialist services, and construction was awarded to Re A Letamisa Trading and Projects CC, with an estimated completion time of 10 months at approximately R80 million. Moneyweb previously reported alleged irregularities in the tender processes, prompting Raubex Construction to seek a review and set aside the tender award through the High Court in Johannesburg. However, efforts to obtain public court documents and comments from Raubex were unsuccessful, with the company referring inquiries to its lawyer for further details. The report indicates that Re A Letamisa Trading and Projects CC’s tender price exceeded Raubex’s by R30 million. Moreover, dismissing the urgent interim interdict application suggests that the court did not find Raubex’s arguments compelling enough to warrant urgent intervention in the tender process.
