A fourth suspect has handed himself over in a high-profile investigation into alleged extortion and money laundering involving prominent figures in the taxi industry.

Who surrendered and where

Bafana Sindane, described in reporting as a Pretoria-based taxi boss allegedly linked to Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni, handed himself over to police on Friday with his legal representatives and was formally added to the criminal matter.

What the investigation alleges

Investigators are probing allegations that several taxi bosses demanded more than R2 million in protection fees from a mining businessman between 2022 and 2025. The matter includes charges of extortion and two counts of money laundering against the accused.

Who else is implicated

Earlier arrests in the probe included Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni, Mvimbi Daniel Masilela and Philemon Msiza, who were taken into custody on related charges and appeared at the Kwaggafontein Magistrate’s Court.

Context and prior links

Reporting notes that Sibanyoni is known to control a fleet of more than 300 taxis in Mpumalanga and has previously been linked to investigations involving taxi-related violence. His name has also reportedly surfaced in matters involving alleged cartel figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

Legal response

Sibanyoni has denied wrongdoing. According to reporting, his lawyer, former National Director of Public Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams, said his client would challenge the accusations and would consider civil action for defamation.

All four accused are expected to appear at the Kwaggafontein Magistrate’s Court for a bail hearing as investigations continue. Authorities are also probing whether the alleged extortion links to broader criminal activity within the taxi industry.
