A 24-year-old man from Limpopo has been arrested after police say he reported to an officer that he had killed his Grade 12 girlfriend, who was later found dead in his home in Ga-Makgoba village. The killing is being investigated as a domestic violence-related murder.

How police say the arrest unfolded

According to police, the incident began on Wednesday, June 10, when the suspect went to the residence of a SAPS member at Titibe Village in Ga-Dikgale at about 8:40pm and informed the officer that he had killed his girlfriend. Police were alerted and responded to the report.

Police said the suspect led officers to his residence at Ga-Makgoba village, where they found the Grade 12 learner lying motionless inside his bedroom. The victim was certified dead at the scene.

Preliminary findings and investigation

Preliminary police investigations indicate that the victim had been strangled. The motive for the murder is not known at this stage, and a murder case was opened by police in Sebayeng.

Official response

Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the killing and called on communities to reject gender-based violence and domestic abuse.

“Violence can never be a solution to relationship challenges. We urge members of the community to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving disputes and to make use of available support structures when relationships become strained,” Hadebe said.

Next steps

The 24-year-old suspect is expected to appear in court. Police continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the learner’s death.
