South African Post Office secures first unqualified audit in six years

After years of financial challenges and operational uncertainty, the South African Post Office (SAPO) has reached a milestone that could help rebuild confidence in one of the country’s most recognisable public institutions.

The organisation has received an unqualified audit opinion from the Auditor-General for the financial year ending 31 March 2026its first such outcome in six years.

The achievement signals notable progress in strengthening governance, tightening financial reporting processes and improving internal controls.

Governance takes centre stage

Announcing the achievement on social media platform X, SAPO described the unqualified audit as a major step forward. According to the organisation, the result demonstrates improvements in governance, more reliable financial reporting and a reduction in audit findings.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Fathima Gany said the audit outcome reinforces the importance of building strong governance while the organisation works to recover.

She noted that governance should not be viewed as something that happens after recovery but rather as a foundation of the recovery process itself. Gany added that the latest financial results provide partners and stakeholders with greater confidence in the organisation’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

Government welcomes the progress

The achievement has also drawn praise from government.

Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Solly Malatsi congratulated SAPO on reaching what he described as an important milestone.

He highlighted that stronger governance and greater accountability have played a key role in improving the audit outcome.

Malatsi also emphasised that while the unqualified audit is a welcome achievement, maintaining those standards will be just as important in the years ahead. He encouraged the organisation to build on the progress and continue strengthening its operations.
