Pretoria Technical High School Students Shine in National Skills Competition

Two students from Pretoria Technical High School have been recognized for their outstanding performance at the recent Sasol Foundation and Kagiso Trust National Skills Competition. The competition, which ran from August to September at the Advanced Training Institute (ATI), culminated in an award ceremony on October 2.

National Development Plan Alignment

The competition, held annually, aims to bolster the country’s workforce by cultivating vocationally trained artisans in line with the National Development Plan (NDP). The NDP targets producing 30,000 artisans annually by 2030 to meet the growing demand for skilled labor.

Diverse Skills Showcased

Participants from schools across the country showcased their talents in various disciplines including welding, woodwork, civil services, automotive, electronics, construction, electrical work, and engineering graphics and design (EGD).

National Awards Showcase Talent

Top students and teachers from each province competed for national awards in their respective categories on September 26 and 27. Prizes included valuable apprenticeships from the Artisan Training Institute and scholarships from CAD4ALL, among other rewards sponsored by StemLAB, robotics kits, toolsets, and courses.

Pretoria Tech Achievements

Representing Pretoria Technical High School, Amogelang Mathabathe secured third place in the Woodwork category, while Manganye Nikiwe excelled by earning second place in the Civil Services category.

Dr. Mankodi Moitse, CEO of Kagiso Trust, emphasized the importance of addressing South Africa’s skills gap to empower the youth economically. Collaboration with the Sasol Foundation and the Department of Education aims to promote vocational training as a viable career path, contributing to future economic growth and innovation.

Gender Diversity in Skills Competition

Gao Mothoagae, Vice President for Corporate Social Investment (CSI) at Sasol Foundation, highlighted the increasing participation and success of female learners in the competition, underscoring the trend towards greater gender diversity in skilled trades.

Promoting Sustainable Development

Mothoagae emphasized the pivotal role of highly skilled human resources in driving sustainable development in the country. He praised initiatives like skills competitions for raising professional standards, increasing awareness, and expanding the pool of skilled professionals.
