Ramaphosa Urges Further Action to Prevent Initiation Deaths

President Cyril Ramaphosa has stressed the need for traditional leaders to prevent initiation deaths. Jacaranda FM reports he was at the National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders in Cape Town. Ramaphosa’s call amid a troubling increase in initiation-related fatalities. There have been 34 deaths recorded during the recent summer initiation period in the Eastern Cape, up from 23 in the previous year.

The president called on government, communities, and traditional leaders to work together to safeguard the lives of young initiates. He underscored ongoing efforts by the Departments of Justice and Constitutional Development and Traditional Affairs to address the issue through alternative dispute resolution and resource allocation. Ramaphosa highlighted the responsibility of traditional leaders to ensure the safety of initiates, emphasising the tragic outcomes when initiation practices result in loss of life.
