SAFTU Accuses Amplats of Prioritising Profits Amid Looming Retrenchments

The South African Federations of Trade Unions has vehemently opposed the looming Amplats retrenchments. According to Jacaranda FM, Amplats is initiating a section 189A process to reduce costs by R5 billion, potentially resulting in 3,700 job losses. Saftu’s spokesperson, Trevor Shaku, criticised Amplats for prioritising profits over workers’ livelihoods, deeming the planned retrenchments unacceptable.

He highlighted the potential impact on 17% of Amplats’ workforce and the already high unemployment rate of 32.1%, warning of exacerbating the situation. Shaku emphasised the potential consequences for families, foreseeing increased poverty.
