Man to appear in court over alleged axe murder of domestic worker in Eastern Cape
A 31-year-old man is expected to appear at the Cacadu Magistrate’s Court on Monday after his arrest in connection with the killing of a domestic worker at a homestead in the Eastern Cape.
What happened
According to the South African Police Service (Saps), the incident occurred on Saturday at around 11am when a domestic worker arrived at the home of an elderly woman who is disabled and required assistance. The 64-year-old victim was warming water to begin household chores when the elderly woman’s grandson approached and demanded to know what she was doing at the homestead.
The grandson allegedly fetched an axe from his bedroom and repeatedly struck the victim. The victim screamed and fled outside; neighbours rushed to intervene but were unable to save her. Saps confirmed the victim succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
Arrest and court appearance
Saps said the suspect was arrested at his homestead in the Ndonga Administration area following an investigation by the Cacadu Crime Prevention and Detectives Unit. He is expected to appear before the Cacadu Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Official response
“The law must take its course to eradicate such barbaric conduct in our communities,”
District Commissioner Rudolph Adolph expressed concern over what he described as hostility and brutality displayed by young people who take advantage of elderly people.
Related policing update from Limpopo
The same report also notes a separate incident in Tubatse, Limpopo, where police arrested a 26-year-old suspect in connection with an attempted murder after a shooting at Mashamthane B1 Village. Police said the complainant was shot in the leg during an altercation, admitted to Dilokong Hospital for treatment, and that officers seized the firearm allegedly used. The suspect faces charges including attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition, and is expected to appear before the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Saps said investigations into both matters are ongoing.
