Three suspected extortionists were fatally shot by police during a confrontation in the Nothintsila locality of Ngqeleni, Eastern Cape, on Monday, 2 November 2026. According to police reports, officers from the Mthatha-based TRT were acting on credible information regarding three men believed to be involved in extorting money from businesses in Ngqeleni. The men were reportedly collecting cash from local shops when the police were alerted.
Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, Eastern Cape police spokesperson, noted that the officers encountered three individuals matching the descriptions provided while patrolling along the Nothintsila gravel road. As police vehicles stopped and the officers approached, the scene quickly escalated.
Exchange of Gunfire Leaves Suspects Dead
The suspects allegedly opened fire on police upon being approached. The officers returned fire, resulting in the fatal wounding of all three suspects. No injuries were reported among the police members involved in the confrontation.
“The suspects opened fire on the members, and the members retaliated. All three suspects were fatally wounded. No police members were injured,” said Brigadier Gantana.

Unlicensed Firearms with Serial Numbers Removed Seized
During the investigation at the scene, police recovered three pistols, each with its serial number filed off. These firearms were taken in as evidence as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Cases of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition have been opened following the deadly exchange.
IPID Steps In for Independent Investigation
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) was notified of the incident, as mandated by South African law regarding deaths resulting from police action. The directorate has begun an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, as required by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate Act of 2011.
“IPID was summoned to the scene in line with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate Act, 2011 (Act No. 1 of 2011) which requires that deaths resulting from police action be reported to and investigated by IPID,” said Brigadier Gantana.
